CRUSH FESTIVAL - THREE BUCKETS WINERY

Had a wonderful weekend in the Adelaide Hills!

A friend and acquaintance of the wine makers at the Three Buckets Winery had asked if I would like to exhibit some of my work during the "Crush Festival". This was the first time that Blefari & Sons had participated in the event and they were looking for an artist to join in. There were many such collaborations in the event.

As I had spent some years living in the Adelaide Hills I thought it would be wonderful to revisit and take the opportunity to share my work with a new audience.

As it turned out it became a mini reunion with family and friends in a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Sales were good and so was the wine.

Fire at Sunrise

The smoke from the fire near Wilmington added an eerie atmosphere to the sunrise this morning.
We woke up to the smell of smoke and a rising wind, the firefighters will be in for a difficult day.
So far 5,000 hectares of grassland has burnt in the hills and gullies near Horrock's Pass which has been closed to traffic.

The two little cousins Polly and Claire have spent a lot of time together getting to know one another but the time has come for Polly to go back to Melbourne.
It has been interesting seeing so much of both Claire and Polly and watching them develop an awareness of each other.
Plans have been made to meet up as a whole family again at Easter so we all have something to look forward to.

What a delight to have Tamsin, John and Polly visiting from Melbourne.
I receive lots of photos and videos via e-mail and talk on Skype but it is lovely to have cuddles, smiles and play baby games.
Polly has such a sweet little personality and is very alert, taking in all her surroundings. She is getting much stronger on her tummy and is nearly rolling over so it won't be long before she will be on the move.

6 Months

Claire is six months old this month. Time has flown by so quickly and she is developing into an interesting little character. At the moment she is rolling over all the time and at last has worked out how to roll back however it seems to be a continuous rolling action which sees her crossing the carpet to the Christmas presents around the tree and all that crunchy paper.

The Sails are Back

The sails on the wharf have been absent for quite a while due to damage in high winds. Now they are back just in time for the festive season. Sunrise this morning was very festive ;-)) There is still a lot of cloud around which in this case coloured nicely at dawn before the sun slipped behind them to produce a grey day. Maybe it is a premonition of the heat to come as the forecast for Christmas day is 42 C.

As part of my role as photographer for the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden I am currently taking photos of the newest refreshment; Lemon Myrtle, Quondong (Wild Peach) and Wild Lime ice-cream.
There are many new products available in the Arid Smart shop so I have also been taking pics of these as well as the new outdoor furniture.
The next task is to take images of cheese platters but we are waiting for the wooden platters and new china and glassware to arrive before this goes ahead.
Another new product is a calendar which features many of my images. This compliments the postcards and cards which have been selling well.

Skyping

Modern technology is wonderful for keeping in touch with the new baby in Melbourne. Polly has grown so much since our visit but I feel as if I have been part of her progress with regular photos, videos and Skype visits most recently using the iPad. Here I have a few photos taken at the last Skype session and edited with an app called "Filterstorm". This is quite easy to use and provides a pretty good result. A long way from the old box brownie that I took my first photos with.
Looking forward to having everyone together for Christmas. There is nothing like a real cuddle ;-))

I am currently working on an interactive version of the Family Tree to pass on to the new grand children.
Lucky for me my sister Steph has done all the hard work of tracing family members and really all I have to do is transfer the information and add pictures.

The 11th of the 11th of the 11th of the 11th seemed like the perfect opportunity to remember Lee (my father) who fought in WW2.
Lee (Stanley John Muston) put up his age to 17 so that he could join the army with his friends and head off overseas on a big adventure. He served in the Middle East as a driver, transporting Italian prisoners of war and later saw action in New Guinea.

Many of his friends were killed in combat. Although he didn't talk much about his war experiences he told one story about being taken off a plane in New Guinea to make room for a commanding officer. The plane crashed not long after take off with no survivors.

When he returned from the war he took the attitude that life is here to enjoy and people can choose to make the most of opportunities.

Bushfire Haze

I have been waiting for the Jacarandas to bloom, the purple trees look lovely in the landscape, especially when looking out across the town, but smoke from the Central Australian bush fires has smudged the clean horizon.
When we visited Alice Springs earlier this year the park ranges and aboriginal elders warned of this bush fire season. Several burn offs had been done but the unseasonable rain had brought new growth which was difficult to contain over such a large area.

Spring time and the weather is changeable jumping from cool and windy days to warm and sunny followed by another cool change often accompanied by a strong wind. Not the best weather for photography but occasionally there are some stunning moments like this one when the sun peeped out for a few minutes.

I am absolutely delighted that I have been selling my pastels, both framed and unframed, through Curdnatta Gallery and recently the local Sunday market.
Sales online have also been good with the "Red Bubble" calendars and cards being snapped up as people look for original and interesting "Australian" images to send to friends and relatives overseas.

Visiting Polly in her second week gave us the opportunity to get to know this precious little bundle. We also experienced a few firsts.... first pram ride, first ride in the car to the clinic and first shopping experience. At this stage she has strawberry blond hair and large blue eyes. Looking forward to seeing her grow.

On 24th August our second granddaughter Polly was born in Melbourne. She is the daughter of Tamsin and John . We will visit soon for lots of cuddles and look forward to Christmas when the whole family will be together. The boys will definitely be out numbered, especially when Melissa has her baby girl.

Whales in Town ;-))

Often at this time of the year mothers and calves venture up into the calm waters of the Spencer Gulf but rarely do they cruise through the town itself... The word was out at 5pm that whales were cruising past the west side jetty. By the time I got there they had moved over to the east side jetty. I headed over the bridge hoping that they wouldn't disappear underneath, heading further up the gulf... LUCKY... they played around the jetty for a while giving those watching quite a treat and then headed back south past the wharf and back down the gulf. I was able to get a few shots of them with the town centre directly behind them. No tail displays just a lot of gentle playing ;-))

Boat trailers line the car park and the calm waters beckon.
At first light the fishermen are already heading out to their favourite spots with many having made the annual pilgrimage to Port Augusta to to try their luck at catching these huge fish.

I am really enjoying working with pastels at Curdnatta Gallery each Tuesday.
This is a 3 to 4 hour session and I generally limit myself to one finished piece each week. This prevents me from "over working" the piece.
The A2 size allows some flowing body movement so I get a bit of a work out as well ;-)).
I love interpreting my photographs, looking for the patterns and designs where I can use sweeping lines of colour.

Port Lincoln "Uke Muster"

John was a very happy camper when he attended the "Uke Muster" over the weekend. Ukulele lovers from around the region were treated to a weekend of workshops, tutorials impromptu jam sessions and a concert on Saturday night. Members of the Adelaide Ukulele Appreciation Society traveled to Port Lincoln and Tumby Bay for the event which was sponsored by Country Arts South Australia. So many new techniques for me to listen to over the coming weeks ;-))
I managed to make the most of the event by taking a few photos and exploring the beaches around Tumby Bay.

In addition to the recently completed visitor guides my photos have been published in the new Tourist guide and the first round of post cards and gift cards for the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. Apparently the cards are quite a hit already which I am delighted about. There will be further photographic opportunities in this area.

It has been an interesting week with the new visitor information signs unveiled, the release of the new tourism guide and the Arid Lands postcards and gift card range becoming available.
All of these showcase my photographs and to see them looking so good in a range of printed products has been very exciting.

Claire Archer arrived on June 27th 2011 weighing 8lbs 4 ozs.

A gorgeous daughter for Carly and Brad and our first grandchild.

The staff at the hospital have been very attentive, despite the busy schedule, with babies all over the place.

Claire's other grandparents Graham and Julie and great Nan Pat along with aunties and uncles Tamsin, John, Penny and Ryan and all the extended family will ensure that Claire is well loved and spoilt ;-))

Curdnatta Photographers - PhotoShop Tutorial.

At the June meeting I did a tutorial on "Adding Skies".

Here is an overview of the process for those who could not attend.

Choose two images that compliment each other.
Make a copy of the background of your main image by RIGHT clicking your mouse on the LAYER named background in the drop down menu on the right of the screen and choose DUPLICATE LAYER.
Go to the SKY image and select the whole image .... either by using the rectangular marquee tool or by holding down CTRL and A.
Copy the SKY and paste it on to your background.
Drag the SKY layer so that it is sandwiched between the background and background copy layers.
Use the MAGIC WAND tool and select the sky on the top layer.... the area will be surrounded by dashed lines... If it is not all selected adjust the Tolerance on the top tool bar and try again.
RIGHT click on the selected area and choose FEATHER and adjust to between .5 and 1... this makes a softer edge.
CUT , DELETE or ERASE the area.
To deselect ( remove the dashed lines) hold down CTRL and D.
Adjust the LEVELS of each layer to your preference.... go to IMAGE - ADJUST - LEVELS and a move the arrow to adjust light and shade.
REMEMBER to merge or flatten layers before you save your new image. LAYERS ... FLATTEN IMAGE.

Stretching the Boundaries.

A customer at Curdnatta Gallery needed a piece of art in blue to complete a decorating assignment. The only piece that fitted the requirement was a small blue pastel.

Quick thinking and the wish to experiment led to a photograph of the piece being printed on canvas at the local printers. I am quite happy with the results.

Only a month to go till grandchild number 1 is born!
The baby shower afternoon tea was a lot of fun with friends and family invited to afternoon tea.
On a beautiful Autumn day all the family silver, china and embroidered tablecloths came out for an airing and looked resplendent laden with miniature cakes, tarts, pasties, sausage rolls and sandwiches.
There were lots of lovely gifts and of course silly games and tips to educate the mum to be.

Melbourne

My visit to Melbourne provided the perfect opportunity to do some serious BABY shopping with Tamsin. We don't know if this one is a boy or a girl and finding unisex baby clothes was a little tricky. According to Tamsin it saved us a lot of money ;-)).

Before John flew off to Cambodia to take part in the OXFAM photoshoot we all went out to lunch at Dalesford where the highlight (apart from the magnificent food) was the feeding of the kookaburras that fly in once a day for a meal. Looks as if they get prime pieces of steak.

The Autumn leaves were putting on a great show and I just loved the different landscape, considering it only seemed like yesterday that we were at Uluru.

The highlight of my visit to Hobart was MONA! Museum of Old and New Art.

MONA is the extraordinary $150 million museum carved out of a sandstone cliff and built by gambling wizard David Walsh.

David Walsh, has put hundreds of items from his private collection on display, creating what he calls a “subversive adult Disneyland”.

The building was designed by Melbourne architect Nonda Katsalides.

Uluru

Two days at Uluru gave us plenty of time to see the rock in all it's moods (apart from a thunder storm ;-)) This photo was taken at the very last moment before sunset when the sun had been teasing us by hiding behind clouds. The previous day was a classic cloudless day with vibrant blue skies. Unbelievable beauty. The rock itself is very scaly and textured and it exudes a powerful and mystic presence.

KataTjuta means many heads. This a fascinating rocky outcrop is not far from Uluru (Eyres Rock) in the centre of Australia.
The afternoon was moody with the sun light slipping in and out of the clouds creating many different painterly effects on the landscape.

Ellery Creek Water Hole

The water holes in the MacDonnell Ranges are spectacular!
Ellery Creek is part of the Finke River system, with Ellery Creek Big Hole being one of the largest permanent waterholes in the West MacDonnell National Park, offering a important source of water for the local wildlife and a popular, refreshing stop for many locals and travellers.
The Aboriginal name for Ellery Bighole is Udepata. This permanent water made it a special meeting place for the Arrernte people on the fish and honey ant dreaming trails.

The area around Alice Springs has been transformed by incredible Summer rains, usually dry, dusty and red the valleys are currently green and lush.

When we reached Glen Helen station we were offered the opportunity to view the landscape by helicopter. I really hate heights but the idea of taking some different photos was compelling.

I learnt a great deal during the flight..... a door less helicopter means a lot of wind and consequently passengers spend most of the time hanging on tightly... this didn't really allow much time for talking photos LOL.

Breakways - Coober Pedy

After all our travelling over seas we decided it was probably time to explore our own back yard. This week we travelled up the Stuart highway to Alice Springs and then visited Uluru (Eyre's Rock) on the way home.
The centre of Australia was incredibly green after the wettest start to the year on record.
I couldn't get over the transformation of the land around Coober Pedy, having visited this town regularly in my role as Curriculum Advisor for DECS.
The Breakaways were a riot of colour with the usually dry Gibber Plains covered with green growth that played against the many shades of the rocky outcrops.

Tastes of The Outback

Andrew Feilke held a master class as part of the "Tastes of the Outback" food and wine event in the region.

The founder of the Red Ochre Grill, Andrew is an internationally acclaimed guest and consulting chef specialising in creating unique dishes using Australian native ingredients.

Some of the foods available were familiar plants that we see in arid gardens but many were exotic plants from more tropical parts of Australia.

The trick with seafood is to cook it gently and Andrew demonstrated this by using an iron to cook barramundi fillets.

This was another opportunity take photos as a record of the event for the organizers.

Outback Ball

Carly is currently coordinating the "Tastes of the Outback" and required a photographer to record aspects of the event.

We arrived at the Royal Flying Doctor hanger at sunset to find the tables bathed in a wonderful golden light.

Everything was laid out to perfection and the band of amazing young women coordinating the event were in full control. Before I knew it I was asked to take photos of celebrities for the media.

The event raises funds for The Australian Royal Flying Doctor and other organisations including Remote and Isolated Children's Exercise where I spent 10 years as a teacher many years ago ;-))

Redbanks With Wild Life

After the coolest and wettest start to the year on record it is nearly the end of daylight savings and the perfect time to catch the dawn light at the top of the gulf as dawn is at about 7.30am.
Magnificent colours and atmosphere with the hawks surfing the breeze looking for breakfast.
The Red Banks is the eastern edge of the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden and offers very different land form, vegetation and wild life to the rest of the garden.

The Curdnatta Photographers Group is still going strong. This month the theme is Architecture and Structures. This was taken under the Port Augusta Bridge early in the morning when the tide was low enough to stand right under it. The wind was just picking up providing soft movement in the water. I love the play of the shapes and the reflections.

Rain Rain Rain

This has definitely been the wettest March that I can remember in Port Augusta. Widespread tropical cloud moving down from the north brought rain all day long. I am starting to feel a little like the child in a bubble we saw at the Garden of Unearthly Delights during the FRINGE.

WOMADelaide and FRINGE 2011

While John was performing in Nosferatu I had the opportunity to engage with several FRINGE performances and activities including "Oleander" at the Higher Ground ARTS complex, a range of Art Exhibitions including Tracey Moffatt's photography exhibition at the Arth Gallery of South Australia and a romp through the Garden of Unearthly Delights.

On Sunday we both attended WOMAD and thank goodness the weather was mild and overcast unlike the 43 degrees of a few years ago that everyone seems to remember. Good food and a wonderful relaxed atmosphere accompanied the great musical acts. The highlight for me was the Leigh Warren Dancers in 'Breathe.

Nosferatu

On Friday and Saturday John and members of his band along with the local choir Desert Voices and some Adelaide musicians performed at the Adelaide Fringe in "Nosferatu". The original performance was held in Port Augusta at the Desert Fringe last year.

The score was arranged by Mathew Timmis who spent some time teaching in the town but is now based back in Adelaide. A discordant and unnusual piece it complimented the old black and white horror movie well and surprised many in the audience.

Birthday Party

Latest commission was a 3 year old Birthday Party!
What a great experience; no preparation just the fun of taking photos of some great little people who were not shy of the camera.
The perfect opportunity to practice some portrait shots although I had to be quick and there was no opportunity for a staged lighting set up.

Postcards - City of Port Augusta

The first round of postcards has been completed, some of the city of Port Augusta and some of the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. They have also been printed as posters and displayed at the Camping and Caravan show in Adelaide. I had the opportunity to see them on display and it was great to see Port Augusta being portrayed in such a vibrant way.

It was interesting to see thousands of people all gathering information to help them make a decision about their next holiday. We are currently planning a week away visiting Alice Springs and Uluru in early April.

Seagrims' Portraits

It has been a week of PORTRAITS.

I was asked to take additional staff portraits for Seagrims.

It is gratifying to realise how much I have improved in this area since the last time I took photographs for them. I have a much better understanding of lighting and am prepared for a range of difficult situations. The biggest challenge is putting people at ease in what can be quite a confronting situation. I now know a range of photoshop techniques that I can use to enhance the images.

The Curdnatta Photographer's theme for February is portraits. On Saturday 19th February the photographers attended a workshop with Anthony L'Huillier from http://open.abc.net.au/ who gave us some excellent tips for achieving great portrait results with minimal equipment.

He also gave some tips for quick editing techniques using Adobe Bridge.

New Beginnings

I have just ordered my first copy of Blog2Print which will be a record of my first 2 years of retirement. Starting a blog was a new beginning 2 years ago and it is difficult to comprehend the depth of the changes in my life since that time.

Now there are more new beginnings on the horizon with the impending birth of 2 new little beings; our grandchildren.

I just love the new technology which gives us a glimps of the possibilities and ensures that so far development is normal and there are no major complications.

Just think ... those tiny feet will walk the earth and experience a future that I can only envisage .

Great Expectations

Well what great news to share....
In 2011 we are going to be grandparents at last !!!!!

But not just once; twice.

Carly and Brad are expecting their baby in July in Port Augusta and Tamsin and John in August in Melbourne.

We have had a few months of waiting to get the all clear following all the mandatory tests that are part of the early days .... good thing I am patient.

Several interstate trips coming up.

I have already started using up some of those fabric pieces I had stored for ... something... ;-))

Desert Fringe

I spent the morning taking some promotional shots for the approaching "Desert Fringe" which is held in Port Augusta each year.

A range of artists from the Adelaide Fringe "brave" the trip to the edge of the desert and provide a great night out for locals.

The person in the shots is a young indigenous musician and the shots will be promoted across Australia.

The Morning was perfect and the sandhills had been washed squeeky clean by the recent rain ... no footprints.

This year we are actually attending a few Fringe shows in Adelaide. One which originated here last year, performed by local musicians, will be included in the "main" Fringe in Adelaide . John will be playing in that.

We will probably spend a day at Womad as well. ;-))

FACE UP 2

The Yarta Purtli Gallery 1 has been booked for October 2012. I have a list of willing candidates and the journey has begun.

Barb is a fellow artist who volunteered to be part of the last round but somehow we didn't get time to connect. Coffee and conversation revealed unique aspects of her life which have been woven into the photo montage....

Handing over the reigns....

Tamsin and John arrived a few days ago from Melbourne and it has been delightful to sit around catching up on all the latest news...

This year we had the first Christmas at Carly's house carefully watched by Max ( the dog ;-)

In the capable hands of Brad, who is an excellent cook, 'gourmet' touches to the Christmas Dinner magically produced amazing results and complimented the classy decorations by Carly.

It was the hottest Christmas we have had for a few years but the barbecued prawns, the glazed ham and turkey roll were very tempting .....

The 'no flour' chocolate cake "whipped up" by Tamsin topped everything off.

One of the surprises of the year was unexpectedly meeting Tamsin in Paris when we were lining up at the Eiffel Tower, in the same queue… uncanny.

Music Concert

Every year at this time the "SHARPSMUSIC" end of year concert takes place.

Now that we have the new theatre it is a pleasure to attend and students have the opportunity to have a real "stage" experience.

The students are taught by several teachers in the town who combine their efforts to hold the annual event.

Pastel Art

During the ARID event I attended one of the workshops at The Port Augusta Cultural Centre. This was a pastel workshop run by Barrie Goddard. It reignighted my love of drawing with "CHALK" all those years of blackboard ART came rushing back and I felt that this is a medium I could enjoy working with.

Recently I have been joining the artists at Curdnatta on Tuesdays and working with pastels is a great medium to pick up and work with immediately, no mixing, easy to store.... it is only a beginning but I enjoy the freedom and the raw colour.

Resident Photographer AALBG

This week I was asked if I would like to be the resident photographer for the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden.
Paid to have FUN ... who wouldn't jump at the chance ;-))

I will be working closely with Michele the City Council's brand designer who is overseeing the new sales outlet at the Garden. The management will have unlimited use of these images on AALBG postcards, greeting cards, posters, gifts, labels, signage, promotion and advertising etc. The great thing about this association is Michele likes my "arty" perspective so I can play to my heart's content.

This has been a L O N G apprenticeship as I remember taking groups of students to the garden, when it first opened, to take photographs of the plants ;-)) I have watched it grow from tentative beginnings to a thriving tourist hub.

It is on my list of "morning walks" and you never know what little treasures you will find, now I will be able to share these with a wider audience.

Sturt's Desert Pea

Sturt's Desert Pea, Swainsona Formosa, is the floral emblem of South Australia.

This year they are in abundance with large areas near Roxby Downs and Broken Hill covered in the bright red blooms. The best displays the locals have seen for 10 years.

Amongst the red there are a few mutant varieties . Searching for these has become a local past time and the tourist information centres are handing out "Treasure Maps".

Along with the Sturt Pea many other wildflowers are in bloom and the countryside is very picturesque. The contrast between skeletons of trees, a legacy of the drought, and the soft undergrowth is quite striking.

Designer Solutions

The Theme for ARID this year is "ADAPT or DIE" and members of the FIBRESPACE have interpreted this in their own way. FIBRESPACE is a wonderfully liberating group that provides the opportunity to PLAY and explore ideas and concepts.

FIBRESPACE decided to use some of the poles that have previously been used in displays as a base for some fibre totems that can be grouped together as a display.
As usual life has been hectic for some members and only a few are able to participate in this exhibition but happily that left the door open for me to make more than one piece.

The title for my entries is "DESIGNER PLANTS".Description: Genetic modification and the adaptation of plants to specification is the new order of SURVIVAL.Plants that are “TACTILE” , “CONSERVE WATER” and “PROVIDE SHADE” will be on everyone’s must have list.
TACTILE - This is for Cynthia who is fighting her own personal battle at the moment and who expressed the wish that we make our work "touchable". A range of tactile fibres and a couple of bird's nests thrown in ;-)
CONSERVE WATER - Hand printed fabric in gold, using leaves from the garden. "Laced" up the back and rows of plastic piping stitched into place at the base. Plastic spoons bent to form "leaves" to catch the available water.
PROVIDE SHADE - Created with all those things one uses to set up shadecloth.
We have a great position organised, along the wall near the entrance to The Arid Lands Cafe. As these are soft sculptures we don't have to place them in the garden.

Title : CLIMATE SNAKE TOTEM
Description:
All bush animals have to adapt to their changing environments constantly. We humans adapt the environment to suit us. Have we gone too far??? Is climate change the proverbial snake in the grass?
My snake starts the climb up his totem as a fat well fed snake in rich lush grass but the higher he climbs the thinner he gets. Is this due to climate change? He can’t adapt as he gets higher as his environment is changing too fast. Is that smog or the quick fix bandage we are trying to impose on the world that he crawls through part way up? As he reaches the top he has become almost a shadow of what he once was. Has he struck a barren dried up mud patch?
Is he dead or alive????
Only time will tell!

Desert Blooms

There seemed to be a break in the weather at the weekend so we headed North in search of wildflowers. It wasn't long before we realised that there was rain ahead so we made the most of what good weather was left by deviating off the main highway to take photos. There were plenty of opportunities to capture the wildflowers popping up amongst the dead wood, remnants of trees that didn't survive the drought.

We were listening to "Macca" on the radio and a woman announced there were Sturt Pea clusters North and South of Glendambo.... we decided we might as well head up to see what we could find.

On the way we pulled in to have a look at Lake Hart which is normally a dry salt lake surrounded by desert. It was full of water and the rain cloud moving in from the North created an amazing soft misty landscape which was enhanced by the lovely display of wildflowers in the rich orange earth. Breathtaking!

We arrived at Glendambo and sure enough there were several clusters of Sturt's Desert Pea our State's floral emblem and the recent showers had covered them with jewel like drops of water... wonderful!!!

A Great series of pics to sort through and share....Flinders Ranges And South Australian Tourism were quick to make a purchase.. ;-))

It is over a week since we returned from our wonderful travels. As I open this page I am greeted in Aussie English not German or Czech language ;-))

It will take quite some time to work through my photos but I am taking the time to relive the moment, what little treasures they are.

I am back in the swing of things with regular meetings leading up to the "Adapt or Die" sculptural exhibition at the Arid Lands Botanic Garden. The Curdnatta Photography group is holding an exhibiton to coincide and we are currently gathering these pieces. My contribution is illustrated here.

After the heatwave in Europe the weather here is colder that we have experienced for quite a while and the regular rain has produced a bumper crop of WEEDS!!!... I am sure some of those seeds have been hiding for 20 years waiting for their chance at life ;-))

Ah well ... plenty of exercise awaits!!!

Cloudy but perfect weather for exploring London. We are both feeling better and ready to pick up the pace again (Summer colds ;-(( )

At last the opportunity to connect to all those iconic places that have been referred to so often in our lives.

The place is buzzing with summer holiday makers so there are long queues to see many of the highlights including Buckingham Palace which is currently open to the public… good thing we have seen several palaces already ... didn't fancy standing in line for most of the morning... ;-DD

We spent the day getting our bearings and taking photos of anything that caught our eye ;-)

Tomorrow we tackle the railway.

Ireland

It is difficult to believe our week in Ireland is over. Tomorrow we fly to London.

A week of beautiful countrysides, warm, hospitable people, rugged coastlines, music, history, more fabulous food, Guinness and Whisky...

End of Cruise

Well the cruise is over and we are currently in Praha (Prague). The hot weather has followed us all the way and we are now used to tramping all over cities and the countryside without a complaint.
The final evening in Budapest was magical as we cruised up the river to view the city lights from the top deck of the boat. This wonderful city really appealed to me, we had heard so many aspects of the history connecting this magestic city with Communist rule and the cruise was a poignant moment with the opportunity to reflect on how we should value our heritage and lifestyle.
Prague is a similar grand old city.
Today we visited Terezin where political prizoners and Jews were held before being shipped to concentration camps. A very sobering experience and a complete change from other tours.
Off to Ireland tomorrow and catching up with Tamsin and John.

In the footsteps of Mozart

Salsburg, Melk, Durnstein, Vienna the heart of tourism in Austria.
Huge numbers of ships and buses conveying thousands of tourists to the most popular places.
Surprisingly the tours work like clockwork. We have earpieces connected to a receiver that is worn around the neck. These tune into a frequency and microphone unit used by the tour guide so we can wander around within close range and hear all the information without the guide having to shout at us….
Remind me not to get famous… the thought of a cardboard effigy outside every souvenir shop in my home town is not appealing ;-))
The weather is still warm and many places do not have air conditioning the river is attracting many families who are on Summer Holidays and you can see people dotted along the banks swimming, fishing and boating.

Austria

We have left Germany behind and are heading towards Venice. Cathedrals, towers, monastries, castles and lots of steps. So many buildings have been recently renovated, all competing for the tourists and of course we actually pay for the continuing upgrades which attempt to bring the buildings back to their original glory. In Germany in particular many buildings were destroyed during the war and have been completely rebuilt to original plans...

Many buildings and towns have architecture which includes Roman influence , gothic architecture and baroque decoration... an interesting mix .....

More Wonderful Experiences.

More beer, wine, ice cream and now sausages, sauerkraut and mustard.
We have reached the highest point in our tour and now begin the descent down through the locks. The Canal from the River Main to the Danube actually passes over highways… it is an amazing construction, which has opened up the water ways from the Black Sea to the North Sea. All the ships are built to fit into the locks and pass under the dozens of bridges, even the steering cabin collapses and no one can stand on the top deck in some stretches because there is the likelihood of hitting your head on a bridge ;-)
In Regensburg we decided to wander around by ourselves. The guided tours are good but I enjoyed the chance to soak in the atmosphere and do some shopping away from the tourist centres without having to keep up with the fast pace.

The River Rhine

We spent several days travelling down the River Rhine and are currently on the River Main. The countryside is GREEN, GREEN, GREEN!!! Such a rich delight.
The weather has been very hot, up to 35C and quite humid. There have been at least 2 tours offered each day but today we decided on taking part in the morning tour only. Most tours include quite a bit of walking and as the sun sets at about 10pm the afternoon walks can get quite warm, especially on streets with cobblestones.
Everyone seems to have flocked to the camping sites along the river for the Summer holidays and even in the cities people walk along the edge of the river late into the evening.
We have had the opportunity to sample some of the wonderful beers and wines and ice cream rather than coffee and cake ;-))
There are many locks in this part of the river so bus tours have been organised to take us to some of the small historic towns while the boat navigates these locks.

Antwerp

Most of Tuesday was spent on the road from Paris to Amsterdam where we boarded the cruise ship Amadagio at about 5pm. It took quite a while to drive out of Paris and it’s surroundings as many people were heading off on their annual summer holidays. We stopped for lunch at Antwerp, in the quaint historic area of the city known for beer, waffles and chocolates. Wonderfully restored and maintained, cobbled streets and buildings around the square offered some picturesque photo opportunities. We were welcomed on board the cruise ship with the usual pomp and ceremony and wonderful 4 course meal.

City of Bridges

Today we saw Paris from the River Seine. Another perspective on this beautiful city.

Each bridge adds it's unique character to the city scape.

Following the river cruise we went to Montmartre the bohemian artist area. Here the streets are very narrow,. there are many tourist destinations and once again endless cafes and restaurants.

Sacre Coeur the imposing Catholic church dominated the landscape with yet another amazing view of the city.

Oh!!! Surprise surprise... guess who we saw going the other way on the river ???? See Eiffel Tower Surprise...

A beautiful Summer day showed Paris in all her glory.

We had a morning tour where we we were introduced to many of the significant landmarks including the Eiffel tower. In the afternoon we visited Le Louvre with a million other people. The first Sunday of the month is free admission and with this being the first weekend of the Summer school holidays everyone in Paris seemed to be out making the most of the beautiful weather.

7 million people visit the eiffel tower each year so what are the odds of meeting your own daughter lining up in the same queue at exactly the same time????? Well that is exactly what happened.
We plan to meet in Ireland later in the month but we didn't expect to meet today in such uncanny circumstances... maybe it is time to buy a lottery ticket ;-p

Paris

Kuala Lumpur to Paris in 12 hours!!!

We arrived at 6.30 am and after some initial complications with the pick up arrived at the Hotel Du Louvre where we sat and had coffee and croisants while we contemplated how to tackle the local area in the midst of a thunder storm. Le Louvre beckoned but so did the streets. We decided to plunge in and walk along the river to get our barings. We arrived back soaked but happy and delighted to find our room was ready.... a chance to catch up on some sleep.

There are many restaurents and cafes in the vicinity so we will have much pleasure in testing as many as possible.

Day 2 Kuala Lumpur

Today we travelled to Malacca with the very knowledgable and talkative Mohammed our "praisworthy" tour guide.

I know more about the history or Malaysia now and have a better understanding of the succession of rulers that shaped the country.

Mohammed also explained the "mind set" of modern Malasians around development and the reasons why this country is expanding so quickly to compete with other Asian destinations. We also saw the extent of the suburban development and the infrastructure of highways and toll roads that are necessary to service the expansion.

Visiting Malacca was like stepping into the past with the opportunity to view architecture and practices no longer common.

It was also great to see so much of the countryside which is palm trees and jungle as far as the eye can see... green, green, green. Of course the day ended with a thunderstorm and we hope to start a fresh shiny new day again tomorrow ;-)

Historic information.

Kuala Lumpur

We left Adelaide on the coldest day of Winter and arrived in Kuala Lumpur around 9pm on a warm humid night. Tour East welcomed us but had trouble with their vehicle and after about 30 minutes put us in a taxi for the 45 minute ride into the city. One of the first things you notice as you drive in are the two towers that look like chrystal when lit at night.

Day one was spent exploring the city. Streets of hotels are lined up around the city which seems devoted to shopping. There are huge shopping malls ranging from a market atmosphere to high end brand names from Europe and America. A very cosmopolitan atmosphere and crazy traffic made the day unpredictable but heightened our senses so that we can better appreciate our new experiences.

The temperature is in the low to mid 30s and very humid it makes sense that many people choose to venture out in the evenings and into the night.

Although we explored several of the shopping malls, including one in the twin towers which seem to be a shrine to designer brand shopping, the highight of the day was visiting the Craft centre where there was a display of traditional musical instruments and of course information about weaving, batik, copper and silver work.

The batik material on offer for sale seemed to be prints of the original designs in much the same way that we see many prints of original Aboriginal designs in tourist centres... disappointing but to be expected. Maybe there will be prints made of our marbled fabric one day ;-))

OPAL - Photoshoot

Currently doing a series of photographs for the OPAL project. Working with the local team to depict the ways in which people, especially young people, can pursue an active lifestyle.

We have some lovely outdoor areas and perfect weather most of the year so this has been agreat opportunity to get out and about in our wonderful surroundings.

This is an ongoing project with a different focus every 6 months so more FUN to come ;-)

A quick trip to Adelaide this week and the opportunity to visit the zoo and see Funi and Wang Wang the current star attractions in their "state of the art" accomodation.

It was a lovely leisurely visit, the last time I was there I had 35 excited children to round up...

Seaside Fantasy

This week I have been working on some photos for a family who wanted to capture all the girls together while they were visiting their parents.

Only a couple of hours for taking photos and with the late afternoon sun bouncing off the water .... an interesting challenge.

Not to mention a toddler who's only desire was to get into the water....... ;-))

The Grandmother also wanted a fantasy image of the two little girls... now that was much easier ;-))

MORE HEADSPACE

My second piece for the ADAPTATIONS exhibition features a favourite old woollen dress from the late 80s that I had stored away in case I might need it.

I loved that dress, not sure if the children enjoyed being seen with me when I wore it ;-))

Recently an artist friend who does some amazing work with felt discussed the latest trend of felting old woollen garments and then using them to make hats and bags etc. I thought of all those garments that John managed to mangle in the wash ( sorry John but it is true ) ... what a wasted resource... then I remembered the dress....

After some serious washing, some internet research regarding patterns and a bit of imagination .... 1 woollen dress = 3 hats.

In retrospect I think some time in the drier might have been less harsh and easier to monitor as I have a front loading washing machine ... once the cycle begins there is no return...

However I am very pleased with the result and after they go on tour with the exhibition I will no doubt look good when doing the shopping in the 3 freezing days we get each year ........ ;-DD

HEADSPACE

I always find I have a massive rush of ideas immediately after I have completed a project. It is almost as if I need to empty out the old so the new can find a place to hatch and grow.

Following the FACE UP exhibition and the wedding I realised I only had a couple of months to finalise work for all my other ART's committments. With some new space in my head for creative thought I managed to come up with a couple of ideas ;-))
The theme for Fibrespace 2010 is "Adaptations" with one suggestion .. to use up the many things we hoard in our work areas...

I began by fossicking around in my STUFF ( there is lots of it ) and found some bits and pieces that I thought would go together well. I also managed to find some goodies in John's shed... tile spacers and rusty nails ;-)

The restriction for this exhibition is size... everything for each piece has to fit into a standard reusable shopping bag.

In my collection phase I found an old foam head stand and that set the theme... First I made the papier mache head with the final layer being some of my marbled silk.

I thought a simple Egyptian style headpiece would fold easily to go in the bag ... the rest was pure PLAY with quite a bit of sitting in the sun handsewing... lovely ... ;-)

Foggy Morning May 2010

This week we were treated to a real "pea souper" of a fog. This followed a whole day of rain following a l o n g warm spell. I headed out for a couple of hours to photograph as much of the mood as possible, you never know when an opportunity like this will come again ;-))

The Arid Lands Botanic Garden provided the greatest delight with hundreds / thousands of dew covered spider webs glistening in the soft morning light. The area near the lookout with quite a few skeletons of bushes against the softer greener foliage was very atmospheric with webs attached as embelishments to twigs and grass.

The Curdnatta Photographers are holding an exhibition to coincide with the ARID sculptural event "Adapt or Die" hmmm... quite a bit of material I could use ;-))
Quite a few ideas for a sculptural piece for the FIBRESPACE group's entry as well.

Creating Moody Images

The Lansdcape Group at PhotoArt Gallery.Com provides a monthly challenge. This month the theme is DARK, GLOOMY, GOTHIC and I have been having some FUN.
I have taken some images from my stock of photos, that have been stashed away in files waiting for the right moment, and compiled some extraordinary images that I would not have attempted otherwise.
The secret has been trying to interpret the MOOD and surprisingly a couple of these were taken on bright sunny days with full shadow, the black and white interpretation is the secret.
Generally there are 2 photos superimposed with the moody skies transforming the image.

Thankfully the Curdnatta Photographers theme for the month is BLACK and WHITE ... very convenient ;-))

Curdnatta Gallery

The opening of the Curdnatta annual May Exhibition was well attended and a friendly supportive atmosphere prevailed. Ellenor Day the Local Arts Officer officially opened the exhibition commenting on the great work and the valuable assets provided by the gallery and the art group. Morning tea was a hit and people took time to renew old friendships and catch up on the latest news.

The opening was followed by the Curdnatta Photographer's meeting ... what a hoot... such a great group of people...

May Exhibition

Every year in May the Curdnatta Art Group holds its "May Exhibition" .

Traditionally it is a time for artists to produce new works for the gallery and freshen the place up for the tourist season . Thousands of "Happy Campers" and "Grey Nomads" head north looking for some sun as the weather cools in the southern cities. Hopefully they will take some time to do the cultural / historic walk which leads them to our door; we are housed in the original railway station.

I have a few pieces ready and a couple of portraits left over from the exhibition earlier in the year I guess this will be a surprise to people used to the usual souvenir trade ;-DD

Flinders Ranges and Outback SA Tourism association ordered 100 pouches made from marbled fabric to be used in their forthcoming seminar. The pouches will be gifts for delegates and contain business cards and a USB memory stick with images and information about the region.
The Department of Education and Children's Services purchased images of marbled designs to use in an educational publication.
I received the feedback sheets and statistics from the FACE UP exhibition. 776 people attended during the month! I sold 8 pieces and I am negotiating a few more ;-)). You can see the review HERE.

Brad and Carly's Wedding

Carly and Brad were married on Saturday March 27th. Although the day was hot by evening there was cloud cover and a slight breeze and the night was walm and balmy.
Good food, wine and fabulous friends and family made the occasion memorable. The consensus is it was one of the best weddings we have been to for a while. ;-))

Wedding Preparations

On Saturday Brad and Carly will be married.

What a joyful celebration it will be. The wedding will take place at the Willows Restaurant between Port Augusta and Quorn and will be an elegant, no frills affair organised to perfection and incorporating good food, wine, music and the company of good friends and fabulous family... all the elements they most enjoy in life.

I am looking forward to playing the role of mother of the bride for the second and last time and relishing the prospect of spending time with family and friends who will travel from across Australia to be with us at this time.

All the outfits have been lovingly sourced, created and prepared and are in waiting for the big day ;-)

Susan Phillips an architect who worked on the Port Augusta Cultural Centre is entering the work they did in the building into an Architectural awards. She requested some images of the Barracks courtyard during performances and any other good images of the Gallery or Theatre for potential use as part of the Awards submission.

I was happy to oblige ;-) We have had so many enjoyable moments in this new ARTS CENTRE... good luck Susan!!!

Finally

Well the launch of FACE UP finally happened . Over 100 attended and there was such a fabulous mix of people, a friendly and happy crowd. Sooo many positive comments and several people asking about joining Curdnatta Art Group which was an added bonus.

16 Year old Jack Case played flamenco guitar as people arrived and refreshments were provided by the friends of the gallery. Not all the people who are in the portraits could attend but it became quite a sport for people to be matched with their portraits for photos. Just Colour became a leisurely lounge where people congregated for conversation PERFECT.

Setting up the exhibitions

A couple of FULL ON days setting up the exhibitions in readiness for Thursday's opening. After all the creative outpouring hanging an exhibition is such a mathematical process. The result however is amazing... order from chaos ;-))
The word is out and the exhibition opening should be a great PARTY !!!

Final Stages

With a month to go till the opening of the FACE UP exhibition things are getting exciting! Most of the images are framed and ready; the invitations and posters are done.

The portraits have been great fun to produce. Local identities were asked to bring a range of "artifacts" or items of importance (and themselves) to be photographed. We discussed ideas about how people see themselves, what is important or unique about them and in some cases people revealed who they would really like to be. The responses were very diverse and often surprising which made the process very challenging but exciting and rewarding for both me and the participants.

The photographed items are woven throughout the portrait and in some cases have been totally reconstructed to create the fantasy.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the opening but if you can't make it you will get a sense of the final product here.

This exhibition is part of the "Desert Fringe" an outreach of the Adelaide Fringe Festival. It will be on display throughout the month of March 2010.

Due to the cancellation of the accompanying exhibition I am able to fill the second gallery with marbled fabric... ;-)

40 Years

January 10 is our wedding anniversary.

In 1970 the possibilities were endless and we were young and willing to embrace the opportunities and challenges that life offered.

Here we are in 2010 in a unique partnership that could only exist through genuinely liking each other's company, a deep respect for each other's interests, skills and abilities, a remarkable sense of humour and the ability to allow each person to develop their full individual personality and potential.

Well here we are in 2010 with lots of things to look forward to.

We have just returned from a fabulous Christmas and the perfect week in Hobart with my sister Steph. Steph's daughter Dani made it home from Melbourne for a few days and it was lovely to catch up with them both.

The weather was perfect and we were able to walk everywhere from the great holiday house that we shared with Tamsin and John who flew in from Melbourne too.

The Sydney to Hobart yacht race finale and the Taste of Tasmania food and wine festival were highlights and 3/4 of Hobart must have been out and about in the beautiful sunny , warm weather..

We managed to get a hire car for a couple of days and headed off with everyone else to Bruny Island where we waited patiently in line for the ferry and took in the scenery and checked out the boat prices.... hmmm perhaps a holiday home ;-))

A trip to Mt Field National Park along the Rivers Run was a lovely escape for us after the desert climate we usually experience and of course the camera was always at hand.

Wishing you the compliments of the Christmas Season and a ... Happy New Year

Wow 2009 is nearly over… how can that be????
My first year of retirement has been full of surprises and as everyone warned busier than I anticipated.

I have managed to establish a routine that includes regular walking and this is also when I manage to take many of my photographs. The light is wonderful early in the mornings and in the evenings so I can loose myself in the moment. Surprisingly every day is different, the weather and the random nature of events continue to intrigue and delight. I have also lost nearly 10 kilos, an added bonus ;-))

Photography has become a paying hobby and I have done a few “GIGS” for ETSA Utilities, The City Council, Tourism Enterprises and various other businesses as well as selling images at the local Art Gallery and online. The ARTS has also been a focus and I participated in several exhibitions during the year. I have also become quite active at the new "Yarta Purtli" ( Place of Stars) Art Gallery and I am now a bit of an expert at hanging exhibitions. This will be useful when I hold my first “solo” exhibition FACE up in March Next year.

The surprise move of the year was starting a Photography Group at Curdnatta Gallery. This has been popular beyond all expectations and a source of new friendships and contacts.

We are all preparing for another wedding in March 2010. Carly and Brad announced their engagement this year. I have enjoyed the freedom of being able to go shopping for wedding bits and pieces without having to fit everything around work. The wedding will take place the last weekend in March at the Willows Restaurant between Port Augusta and Quorn. Brad is the son of local identities Graham and Julie Archer and is currently an assistant manager of the new Tassie Hotel in Port Augusta. Carly is still working for SA tourism in the Flinders Ranges and Outback region travelling the region and interstate... you can join the FACEBOOK GROUP :-))

Tamsin and John made several working visits from Melbourne and we also managed to visit them and attended some of the Melbourne Festival of Arts events. They have been very busy in their new business and you can get an idea of what they have been doing at their website

Yes the music shop is still a hive of industry something that has become very evident now that I am home more often ;-) I have no idea what I am doing but I often have to help out there too. John and his band have participated in many events including the Desert Fringe. Another successful concert was held recently and the new theatre is the perfect venue providing a sense of occasion and yet intimate connection to the audience with great acoustics.

Making sure everyone is well fed has been a focus this year with a range of dietary requirements becoming the norm :-// currently all is well and we seem pretty healthy.

Live music is alive and well, the weather has been good for golf and the snapper have been biting… almost a perfect year.

One Place Over Time.

I have been thinking about putting together another PhotoBook of images for quite a while but the dilema has always been "what topic?" ... "what genre?".... There are so many facets to my work.

Then out of the blue I won the opportunity (see previous post) and I had to make a decision.

The Curdnatta Photographers have a long term project "Same Place over Time" and I had been toying with ways to present my images so I decided this would be the topic of the book.

The PhotoArt team http://www.photoartgallery.com/ have a pretty good setup where you can work on the book and come back to it to make changes before you make a final decision and purchase. You can also share the book on line so others can see it before they make a purchase. You can take a peek at the final product here...
